Our Tohu
At the core of the MBI brand design is the incorporation of two main graphical elements that make up the logo. The Tohu (logo) is stylised to represent the past, present and future. The main design element is that of a stylised bird the Tara “white-fronted tern” which represents achievement and trust. The bird wings represent the bays and our Maunga, Rangitoto, that is represented as a silhouette on the horizon. We have designed the sky to represent the various tribes that once occupied the area. The koru shapes represent continual growth now and into the future.
There are three Key colour schemes for the MBI corporate identity, namely Deep Ocean Teal, Mustard Yelow and Cadmium Yellow Light. Teal is the main base colour which gives the graphic its grounding or foundation, so as to suggest trust, stability. The Mustard Yellow is the secondary colour which is used in a much broader capacity throughout MBI branding.

Te Whenua - the land
The original name for Murray and Mairangi Bay was Waipapa. The name Waipapa means ‘water and wood’. WAI-water PAPA-wooden planks/poles/ground.
This name comes from Kauri yielding era, when in this area the Kauri trees were harvested and floated out to sea. In 1880, Joseph Murray purchased 174 acres at Murrays & Mairangi Bay from a Maori land owner known as Tamati. In 1881, James Murray decided to rename the bays, Big Murrays Bay and Little Murrays Bay. In 1912 Little Murrays Bay was renamed Mairangi Bay. Joseph Murrays residence was located on Montrose Terrace.

MBIS opened in 1958. There have been 9 principals since: Alan Baildon 1958 opened the school, followed by Jack Green 1965, Alan Fisher 1974, Gordon McGhie 1975, Ray Malcolm 1986, Blair Manners 1988, Fay Mason 1990, Colin Dale 2003, Melinda Bennett 2017- current principal.
